DIY planters for the garden: a selection of the best master classes from decorators

Elegant flower arrangements are the decoration of any site. Colorful flower beds, striking the imagination with a variety of colors and shapes of flowers, do not leave anyone indifferent. But it is impossible to highlight the flower garden against the background of the lush vegetation of the site and emphasize its beauty without a decent framing. Do-it-yourself decorative pots for the garden can not only transform the site, but also give the flower beds a complete look.

Types of pots and their purpose

A distinctive feature of the pots from the traditional plant pot is the absence of drainage holes in the bottom of the container, which are necessary for the drainage of excess water. In addition to the decorative function, a properly selected container can facilitate the care of a green pet.

Since the main purpose of decorative planters for the garden is to decorate the interior, the outer surface of the containers in most cases is made more beautiful and attractive.

Depending on the material for making flower pots for the garden, there are the following types:

  • Plastic. One of the cheapest options for pots, the main advantage of which is light weight and ease of care.
  • Wooden. The natural base of the containers protects the plant roots from hypothermia and drying out, and also maintains optimal conditions for growth.
  • Metallic. A modern, durable material that is perfect for outdoor landscaping.
  • Clay. A material with a rough or smooth surface is a universal basis for painting and decorating with paints. But its moisture permeability limits its scope.
  • Ceramic. Natural material, treated with a special glaze, is widely used in both interior and garden design.

The main requirements for pots for decorating a garden are the ability to maintain the shape set by the master and high resistance to high soil moisture and temperature extremes.

If we take the location of an improvised flower garden as a basis, then there are floor structures and hanging pots for the garden

Unusual use of old things

Outdoor pots can be made from anything. Old rubbish, carefully stored just in case, furniture, dishes ...

Unusual hanging pots can be made from old teapots, which are enough to be placed along the stairs, hanging on a wire

In the hands of a creative owner, even an old travel suitcase without a handle can find a second life, which, as the saying goes, is hard to carry, but it is also a pity to throw it away

A wooden box, opened with stain and decorated in the form of a cute fabulous calf, will become a worthy frame for a flower garden

Filling your suitcase is easy by placing several pots of plants directly in it. If the height of the containers is much lower than the walls of the suitcase, you can pour sea pebbles and pebbles on the bottom of the planter, and fill the gap between the containers with moss or crushed bark.

Do-it-yourself pots options

For the manufacture of original containers that can organically fit into the landscape design and act as an effective decoration, you can use a wide variety of materials: burlap and ropes, the remains of plastic film and plastic bottles, gypsum and polymer clay ... Any of these materials in the skillful hands of a master can turn into bright element of garden decor.

Decorative plaster vase

To make an original pots that will last more than one year, you need to prepare:

  • asbestos or polymer gypsum;
  • flexible wire for arranging the frame;
  • construction bandages or strips of fabric 10 cm wide;
  • water-based paints and colors;
  • acrylic varnish for outdoor use.

The cache-pot can have any shape: it all depends on the chosen base for the frame. In our case, a plastic bucket with a volume of 10 liters will act as a temporary basis, which will be removed upon completion of the work.

Place the bucket on a flat surface, turning it upside down. To make the frame, we braid the surface of the bucket with wire, the edges of which we carefully tuck and hide. Remove the resulting frame from the bucket. Now you can start breeding gypsum, the consistency of which in finished form should resemble thick sour cream. We lower strips of cloth or bandages into a container with plaster solution, soaking them for 2-3 minutes. Our task: to overlay the wire frame along the outer and inner walls. The strips of fabric, well-soaked with the solution, are laid out layer by layer on the frame until the thickness of the walls reaches 1.5-2 cm. We carefully coat the walls of the pots with the remaining solution. Leave the structure to dry completely for 12 hours.

After the base has completely hardened, you can start decorating the pots, decorating it with all kinds of pebbles, colored glass and beads

To do this, first level the surface by sanding it with sandpaper. Then we cover the bottom and walls of the product with white water-based paint, on top of which we apply the desired background for the applique or ornament with a second layer.

Car tire hanging planter

An old car tire is an excellent material for making decorative items. Rubber is resistant to external influences and unfavorable weather conditions, thanks to which it is able to properly serve for more than one season.

It is hard to believe that such a colorful parrot, importantly swinging under the canopy of a house or between the branches of trees, can be done in just one day with your own hands.

To make a hanging planter you will need:

  • tire without steel cord;
  • drill and drill with a diameter of 10;
  • sharp knife;
  • washers М8, bolts and nuts;
  • exterior paints.

To make it easier to cut parts, the knife blade can be periodically moistened with liquid soap or detergent.

Symmetrical cutouts 2/3 are made along the side wheel on both sides of the tire. In the larger side of the incised tire, through the triangular cutouts, separate the side part

As a result, a blank should be obtained, which we subsequently carefully turn inside out, giving the desired shape

The body of the parrot is ready: it remains to shape the head of the bird and give it a recognizable shape. To do this, cut out the beak from the scraps of the tire.

Insert the cut parrot's beak into a longitudinal incision made with a sharp knife along the edge of the smaller side of the body

In order to securely fix the beak, we squeeze both halves with a string, drill a through hole through them, through which we then tighten them with a bolt. You can correct the shape of the bird already in place by making several cuts with a knife.

Cut the tail of an exotic bird from the long side of the workpiece along the contour previously marked with chalk

The parrot is ready: it remains to pull off the side parts of the product with a rope or wire, and then paint it in bright colors.

Outdoor flowerpot of twigs

For work, you will need branches 0.7-1.5 cm thick and a thin cord or twine. If possible, it is better to give preference to branches of birch, viburnum and bamboo - they look the most interesting. It is better to choose sticks of the same thickness.

For the manufacture of pots, branches are cut with a knife or secateurs to approximately the same length, which should be 1-2 cm higher than the pot itself. We put the blank sticks close to each other on a flat surface and braid with twine so that we get a mat, the length of which should be enough to wrap around the pot.

Thin branches of trees left after garden pruning can be used as decorative elements. They can serve as the basis for the manufacture of a beautiful pots, which are perfect for decorating both the site itself and the interior of the house.

To create a larger structure, it is better to use bamboo, or round or square bars, assembled in the form of a cube.

A convenient option is when the branches are glued to the burlap base. We wrap the outer walls of the pot with a woven mat and fix the decoration with colorful satin ribbons or the same twine.

Decorative crafts made of wood

In addition to shape and color, products can be distinguished by the quality of the wood itself. So, it is believed that decorative pear crafts most often with small carved details, the beauty of oak is in the naturalness of annual rings, acacia logs have embossed bark, and so on. To reveal the natural beauty of each variety, try to spend as little effort as possible on coloring and the like. Better soak them with special detergents, and then just colorless varnish.

DIY wood crafts, as we see in the example, can become excellent furniture that will fit into a youth interior. Coffee tables, the countertops of which are made in this way, will certainly be remembered by everyone as the main highlight of your apartment. In the first case, you will need round cuts of branches or trunks, approximately the same size. They are mounted into a single surface using self-tapping screws, the top is additionally trimmed and sanded, since ideally there should not be a film of furniture varnish on the countertop itself. You can fill the space between the logs at your discretion, but it is better if the material is closely related, for example, hemp or tow. Well, in the second case, the saw cut becomes very large in the circumference of the trunk, and it is advisable to choose the one who has the most decorative wood pattern. Here, a transparent varnish will help not only to get smoothness and evenness (this is an absolute plus for the daily care of such furniture), but also to protect the material from moisture, high temperature, etc.

Decorative crafts for home

Among decorative crafts for home can be attributed and flower arrangements, beautifully decorated in various vases, and wall panels, and elements that decorate the dining table when serving. Pillowcases that you sew yourself will help you transform the interior very quickly or add the necessary flavor to it. Moreover, painting, embroidery can be used to decorate them, or you can also apply printing on fabric, picking up the pattern you like and contacting a modern printing center.

The decor can also be quite unexpected, because your imagination is not limited to what the designers of stores and salons offer. For example, DIY decorative crafts, photo which decorates our article, allow you to take a fresh look at the use of walls in the apartment. Such fasteners allow you to insert bottles of any format, although, of course, colored glass will look the most impressive. And already inside the bottles, flower arrangements, dried flowers, cereals are installed, in a word, everything that, in your opinion, will make the look of your apartment elegant.

DIY garden - design by L. Potemicheva

I live in Tver. My garden is only 4 years old. We built a house and laid out a garden at the same time. I did the project myself. Divided the plot into zones: a gazebo with a barbecue, a playground with a swimming pool, a bathhouse, an entrance group, a vegetable garden. Natural stone paths were laid, pergolas and benches with decorative gratings were installed to delimit zones.

Our village is located in a pine forest. It was important to fit the garden into the landscape. To do this, my husband and I brought from the forest and planted pine and birch trees on the site, that is, those plants that we see behind the fence. Now that the trees have grown, the plantings look very organic. For the same purpose, we left a strawberry meadow. This is the highlight of the garden. Berries are usually full of berries. And throughout July we have a spa with aromatherapy in our garden!

I love decorative deciduous plants very much. Ornamental apple trees of varieties feel great in waving the garden Ola, Royalty, Adamas, Royal Beauty, Norway maple Royal red and Ginnal's maple, cultivars bladder Diabolo, Red Baron, Summer Wine, white grass varieties Sibirica and Elegantissima, Japanese spirea Golden Princess and Goldflame, from. Wangutta, c. gray varieties Grefsheim... There are other interesting plants as well. For example, several goat willow varieties Kilmarnik.

My special love is hosts. In my opinion, hosts fit perfectly into any composition, and I actively use this property of them. And I also have a small area dedicated to the host collection. Now there are about 30 varieties in it. It all started with five roots, which I brought back in 2013 from the anniversary, world famous exhibition of flowers and landscape design, held annually in London, Chelsea. I am not planning to plant a large number of hosts. I just want to gather representatives of groups into which I conventionally divide all the host variety for myself: white-bordered, yellow-bordered, giants

Our whole family loves the garden, and I just adore it! Here, each plant is planted by our hands with my husband. Perhaps a professional photographer could better capture the character of the garden. But my husband took pictures, and he is engaged in completely different things in life and dwarfs, blue, yellow, with a strip in the middle of the leaf, tricolor, red-curled and others.

When choosing a representative of the group, I give preference to plants with pronounced features or with amusing names (to make the little granddaughter interesting!). Thanks to this approach, my collection has appeared Praying Hands, Gypsy Rose, Orange marmalade, Blue Mouse Ears, Sagae, Sum and Substance.

The garden also found a place. Cucumbers, tomatoes, 3-4 harvests of greens, zucchini, pumpkins - everything pleases. I always plant annuals in the garden: beautiful and useful.

The area with a swimming pool and a "solarium" is a place in our garden especially beloved by guests. We place sun loungers, chairs, an umbrella on the gravel bed. Surrounded by pine trees, bright and unpretentious annuals, hybrid daylilies, and mountain ash are growing here.

There is a lot of stone in the garden area. Combined with natural style, it looks organic. Paths, gravel pads, rockeries - all this only decorates the garden more, makes it convenient to use and easy to maintain.

A large number of plants in containers is also a distinctive feature of the garden. As container crops, I like zonal pelargoniums, tuberous begonias, petunias, and western thuja Smaragd... Some containers stay in place all the time, while others wander during the summer season so that the garden is not boring.

Thank you for the valuable advice and ideas that I tried to bring to life. According to the apt expression, a garden is not a result, but a process. Our garden is changing and will continue to change. But I hope that our grandchildren and the grandchildren of our children will be happy and proud of him, just as we are now. And just like us, they will sing songs about how beautiful our world is until morning in the gazebo to the accompaniment of a guitar! "

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions: 3 workshops

To understand in more detail the nuances of the creativity presented in the article, we will consider the best master classes with a step-by-step explanation of the work being carried out.

1. Spectacular flowerpots made of cement and fabric

To make flowerpots for the garden out of cement and fabric, either pure cement or Portland cement is used. In this case, the mixture with water should be quite liquid. You will also need a bucket or other container for the frame, a piece of plastic and a piece of cloth.

The material must be dense enough and absorb liquids well, that is, synthetics will not work here. It is better to use a cotton cloth.

  • Cut off a piece of the desired size. If you need even edges, then round off
  • We wet the matter abundantly in the solution.
  • We fix polyethylene on the prepared bucket
  • Lay out and smooth the cloth soaked in the solution on top
  • After 2 days, the cement will set and the bucket can be removed.
  • The product is slightly moistened with water and left to dry completely for another 5 days.

Even large-sized plants can be planted in a finished flowerpot.

Experiment with the shape and color of the flowerpots and create your own unique compositions.

2. A funny cat for the garden

To begin with, we prepare a frame from a cut plastic bottle and wooden slats, which are fastened with wire.

The solution is prepared from cement and sand in a 1: 1 ratio, additionally (directly to the hand), gypsum is added during the work. By gradually applying the solution, all the details of the sculpture are created.

The finished figure is polished with a damp hand and left to dry for 4 days. The final touch is painting with water-based emulsion or enamel.

3. Large leaf-drinker for birds and pets

A cement sheet will be no less successful and versatile garden decoration. A plastic wrap is laid on a mound of sand, and then a large sheet (the mound will allow you to get a figure with a depression, and not a flat one). If there are small holes in the sheet, then they should be closed with small leaves so that the cement mortar does not leak.

Next, the sheet is covered with a thick layer of mortar, and a short piece of polypropylene pipe is inserted in the center and filled with cement, which will serve as a leg for the craft.

For several days, the workpiece is covered with a film until it dries. Then the sheet is removed, primed and painted.

If desired, a fabulous fountain can be made from several such blanks.
