India is famous for agricultural farming. At the global level, it appears that we are slowly moving towards the global food crisis. Over the past few years, horticulture has made remarkable progress in terms of expansion in area and production under different crops, increase in productivity, crop diversification, technological interventions for production and post-harvest and forward linkages through value addition and marketing. Performance of crops is measured by various metrics including disease-resistance, yields, stress tolerances, and nutritional value at harvest. Cuddalore district is also known for Cashew nuts for the export potentials. To increase the production, productivity and income of farmers, various schemes are being implemented through Department of Horticulture and Plantation crops.

New horticulture crops

Banana is the major growing region consist of ha, followed by Coconut Ha , Tapioca Ha , Onion Ha , Mango Ha , Acidlime Ha and Chillies Ha are the major Horticulture crops that are cultivated in the district. The blocks namely Andhanallur and Lalgudi were major fruits growing region and Marungapuri, Thuraiyur, Uppliyapuram and Manachanallur were major vegetable growing region. To increase the production, productivity and income of farmers, various schemes are being implemented through Department of Horticulture and Plantation crops. To impart hi-tech production techniques among farmers various schemes like poly house construction, shade net house, mulching, distribution of seedlings of high yielding varieties of fruit crops, vegetables and plantation crops are being done. This scheme is being implemented with an objective to increase the area under Horticulture Crops.

This broadly inclusive definition is appropriate and even necessary in a time when traceability from the producer to the ultimate consumer is of growing interest to government and industry. Products from horticultural industry that go to market still respiring fresh produce are clearly horticultural products. When juiced, sliced or pureed, fermented, frozen, preserved, canned, dried, irradiated, or used in an ornamental construct such as a flower arrangement they remain, in our view, a horticultural product.
