Master gardener landscape fabric

Master gardener landscape fabric

For those who dread weeding, landscape fabric covered by a few inches of mulch may seem like the perfect solution for shrub and perennial beds. The idea behind using landscape fabric is that it will permanently eliminate the need to weed the garden by forming a barrier that blocks weed seeds from germinating, while still being porous enough to allow water to reach the roots of shrubs and perennials. Although landscape fabric initially does a wonderful job of suppressing weeds, as time goes on, it can become a maintenance nightmare. Any mulch or soil on top of the landscape fabric can support weed growth, a problem that is especially difficult to handle when weeds take root through it. This is particularly problematic with perennial weeds.

Landscape fabric – a cautionary tale

Annual weeds are classified as warm-season or cool-season plants, with each kind genetically destined to germinate sprout in the appropriate season, then survive for a year or somewhat less. The same categories are assigned to perennial weeds but these are considerably more long-lived, persisting for 3 or more years. Several key principles limit weed populations in gardens and landscapes, among them these:. Use a knife, or any one of various hoes — standard garden hoe, diamond hoe, or a scuffle hoe. The reason? Whenever soil is disturbed, some of those seeds are brought near the surface where they germinate because they are exposed to light, also appropriate temperatures and moisture. Start a stale seedbed a month or so prior to the desired planting date, thereby allowing for a cycle or two removing weed seedlings. Do everything needed to prepare the planting bed: dig; remove obstructions and weeds; amend the bed; level the soil; then moisten the soil to settle it and allow for germination.

The two main reasons landscape fabric is used are A a desire to keep weeds down and B employing any means necessary to keep rock mulches from sinking into the soil after a rain. Unfortunately, neither of these reasons assures landscape fabric will function as planned. Here is why. Landscape fabric is a temporary weed barrier, suppressing weeds for a few years. Ultimately soil and seeds blow in, settling over the fabric and creating the perfect environment for seed germination. Emerging weed seedlings send roots through perforations in the landscape fabric, growing their merry way downward.
