Incredibly attractive, Astilbe 'Rheinland' Astilbe japonica features abundant, open panicles of sparkling, clear pink flower plumes borne on upright, reddish stems. Quite showy, they rise gracefully in early summer above an attractive mound of fern-like deep green, glossy foliage. Long-lasting, they turn a rich caramel color which provides winter interest to the garden. Not sure which Astilbes to pick?

Non-Olmsted Plants

Gardening Help Search. Easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Prefers moist, humusy, organically rich soils. Soils must not be allowed to dry out. If regularly watered, foliage will usually remain attractive throughout the growing season. A summer compost mulch helps retain soil moisture. This Chinese astilbe variety is noted for having better sun and drought tolerance than most x arendsii hybrids. Removing faded flower stalks will not prolong bloom but may improve plant appearance, particularly if a ground cover look is desired.

You should be ashamed! I recycle old car tires and use them as raised beds. I have lots of unruly bushes and trees in my front yard, as well as a cinder-block cold frame. My flower beds are always absolutely overflowing with an exuberance of plants. I think of myself very much as a plant collector or maybe even a plantaholic. Below is an attempt to list all the plants that are growing in my gardens right now JulyWhen my Flowering Maple last year produced seed, I planted those seeds and got a new generation of Flowering Maples.

Our catalog is a listing of all of the plants we carry, their sizes etc. If you would like to see pictures, please click on the PLANT FINDER button.

The first step was to remove from our plant catalog all the Non Olmsted Brothers plants and the Non-Shakespearean plants that we have listed in our garden diaries. Naturally, this corresponds to the the sweeping renovation project that has been going on in the garden for the past six years. Yes, plants have been planted over the years by well-intended members that were searching for things that would be one if not several of these things: Old, English, Medieval, Hardy, Drought Tolerant, Long-blooming, Rare, Common, etc. Don't believe me? It is so tempting to add to the garden, but heed these famous words: "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. Citation: "Shakespearean" plants are defined by Rev.
