This report presents a computer-based system designed to aid the evaluation of a groundwater system in the Sacramento Valley by developing a computer model to identify areas of concern. It describes the system design and implementation of a computer model that simulates the movement of surface water within the watershed, and the movement of groundwater through the subsurface in response to fluctuations in rainfall. The model is capable of simulating the movement of groundwater through three types of wells, each operating in a different flow regime: recharge, wellhead, and discharge. The model incorporates a set of parameters that describe the physical characteristics of the ground, the subsurface, the wells, and the surface and groundwater inflow and outflow zones. The model output is a digital terrain model and a series of tables summarizing the spatial and temporal characteristics of the simulated groundwaterflow. The groundwaterflow model is a significant component of a groundwater model to be developed for the purpose of predicting future water quality. Preliminary data used to parameterize the groundwaterflow model indicate that the Sacramento Valley aquifer system responds to observed fluctuations in rainfall by a substantial increase in discharge at the surface. Simulated results indicate that the surface discharge from the northern portion of the model watershed is largely due to outflow from the alluvial valley floor and adjacent wetlands.

A computer-based systems approach is used to describe the behavior of groundwater quality in the vicinity of the Buhl Vineyard in the Napa Valley of California, with the goal of identifying the factors controlling the observed trend in quality at the time of sampling. A time-series data set consisting of two years of groundwater quality data was converted to a frequency-domain data set for the purpose of developing a statistical model and for exploring the significance of the various drivers of water quality. A groundwaterflow and transport model (GFTM) is used to explore the sources of the groundwater to Buhl, the transport pathways for the groundwater in the vicinity of Buhl, and the relationships among source, pathway, and quality. A Bayesian modeling approach is used to develop a statistical model that describes the relationships between the driver variables (rainfall, pumping, and groundwater levels), the quality of the groundwater, and the pathway of groundwater. The Bayesian approach requires the specification of a priori distributions for the parameters in the statistical model. The priori distributions are estimated from the two years of observed water quality data using inverse-cubic regression with constraints on the relationships between quality and the drivers.
