Our teaching, research and design programs are among the most advanced in the world. Our research and practice spans a wide range of scales and contexts to address pressing public and private problems throughout the United States and abroad. The Department offers a Master of Landscape Architecture (M.L.A.) degree in partnership with the University of New Hampshire College of Architecture, Landscape Architecture &, Planning, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in partnership with the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture, Design, and Planning. The department is home to the world’s most expansive living laboratory of ecological design, landscape ecology, and regional planning.

The department is also home to the National Green School, the leading environmental education program in the U.S. Other programs include the Landscape Urbanism Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Landscape Architecture (D.L.A.). We currently have 32 graduate students and seven faculty members. We have been in existence for over 30 years and we have faculty with more than 40 years of experience working in both academic and non-academic settings. At the heart of our work is a strong commitment to public good, collaboration, and service. We will continue to make UMass Amherst the premier landscape architecture program in the nation.

M.A. Landscape Architecture

The program is designed to prepare graduates for a career in design and research in urban, regional, and ecological landscape planning, as well as related disciplines and practices. An advanced course in environmental management is offered to all students.

M.S. Landscape Urbanism

The degree is designed to prepare the professional for work in a variety of urban planning and consulting settings. The program is also designed to prepare students for research in urban and regional planning, urban design, and other related disciplines and practices. An advanced course in environmental management is offered to all students.

B.S. Landscape Architecture

The B.S. is designed to prepare the professional for a career in environmental or natural resource planning or design and related disciplines and practices. The program is also designed to prepare students for research in urban and regional planning, urban design, and other related disciplines and practices. An advanced course in environmental management is offered to all students.

C.S.S. Landscape Architecture

The College of Graduate Studies and Research at UMass Amherst is a part of the Graduate School of Arts &, Sciences, one of the world’s leading universities in terms of both scientific research and teaching. The program offers two tracks: landscape architecture and landscape engineering. In the four year program, students are required to take courses in professional and technical subjects as well as in the basic disciplines of liberal arts.

The Bachelor of Architecture (Arch) program focuses on design and problem-solving, the degree program focuses on design and technical know-how. Students have an opportunity to choose their focus from a list of eight (8) options. Design and problem solving combine with the basics of liberal arts and business in a four-year, 120 credit degree program.
